The Job of a Representative
Site Representatives wear many hats; here are some of the most common:
Communicator
- Conduct meetings at your site to secure recommendations from the membership to report to the Chapter Leadership and to report information from the Representative Council/Executive Board to the members you represent.
- Recruit one person for every five unit members at the site to serve as a support network, to promote Association involvement and ownership as well as strengthen the organization at the building level.
- Post notices of meetings and encourage members to attend.
- Conduct elections and polls concerning Association business, when necessary. Assist with membership recruitment.
Decision Maker
- Attend all meetings of the Association.
- Represent all constituents in all actions of the Representative Council.
Information Source
- Be familiar with the policies and activities of the Cupertino Education Association, CTA, and NEA; inform constituents of those policies and activities.
- Maintain an attractive, attention-getting, up-to-date bulletin board with Cupertino Education Association name on it.
- Encourage informal discussions of Association business, especially regarding contract development, bargaining, interpretations of contract, how to file a grievance, etc., in site lunchroom and lounge.
- Attend Cupertino Education Association and California Teachers Association workshops.
- Be familiar with the Cupertino Union School District teaching contract, retirement benefits, and other information that is important to members.
Organizer
- Keep a list of all unit members on your site showing who are Association members.
- Complete and test a telephone tree for your faculty.
- Coordinate school and District activities with the Association calendar so as to avoid conflicts of meetings and activities.
- Assist Association leaders in identifying members who will serve on committees and handle association duties.
- Help Association leaders identify potential future leaders.
The Advocate
- Assist members in resolving minor building level complaints.
- Act as the Association representative in meetings between an individual member and the administration.
- Act as the Association representative at formal and Level I grievances.
- Act as spokesperson for the site in reporting member concerns to both the administration and the Association.
- When issues that are not able to be resolved through the grievance procedure process arise on site, Association representatives act as leaders in organizing members to resolve issues.
Membership Recruitment
- Organize and conduct an ongoing membership recruitment program on your campus.
- Pay special attention to informing new workers of the role played by the Association and the importance of joining and participating.
